Rome rewards the curious. Start with the icons — the Colosseum, the Vatican and the Pantheon — but leave room to get lost. Toss a coin in the Trevi Fountain, eat carbonara in Trastevere, and climb Palatine Hill for the view.

Don't try to do everything. Pick two or three big sights, book them in advance, and spend the rest of your time wandering, eating and soaking up the city. That's how Romans enjoy Rome.
